An RSVP card is usually one of the inserts in an invitation for weddings, birthdays and other formal events. Almost everyone has received this small card, but a lot of us do not know what to do with it or what it means.
RSVP is an abbreviation that is derived from the French phrase Répondez S'il Vows Plaît. It is translated in English as "Please Respond." An invitee receiving an RSVP must reply a day or two after receiving the invitation. You must confirm how many persons are coming with you, as stated in the RSVP card. Example: RSVP, We have reserved TWO seats for you. An invitee should reply to the host to confirm that the two of them are coming to the event.
Some RSVP card says; RSVP, Regrets Only. This means that you will only reply to the host if you will NOT come, because NO response means you are coming.
Here in the Philippines, sending a reply to an RSVP is not practiced. Instead, the host would still text everyone in the guest list to confirm if they are coming or not. A tedious process but better safe than to pay for the slot of someone that is not coming. The host of the event can use the slots to invite other friends instead.
Good news, event coordinators now offer RSVP service. The host just need to submit the guest list with the corresponding cellphone numbers and the event coordinator will be the one to do the tedious job of texting everyone in the guest list. Of course the host has to pay for this service, but it is very minimal compared to the stress he will be getting in doing the RSVP Service.
As an invitee, next time you get an invitation with an RSVP card, be a gracious guest and respond immediately if you are coming or not.
